ERUPTION: Volcano Kills Five in New Zealand

A volcano erupted overnight on New Zealand’s White Island today, killing at least five tourists and injuring a dozen more. 

The popular tourist spot, which was already known to be an active volcano, had shown no signs that an eruption was imminent. Tourists were known to be walking around the rim of the volcano just as it exploded. It’s unknown how many people may still be on the island because it is too dangerous to send emergency crews there, but it’s believed there were about 100 people on or near the volcano at the time.
