In spite of recent lawsuits , harsh criticism, and character questioning , Lizzo was awarded the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award. Lizzo attended the Black Music Action Coilition’s Gala on Thursday night, which surprised some as she opted out of the Black Carpet and sat in the audience and supported other award winners. By the end of the event in a cheerful surprise, Lizzo’s Big Grrls and Big Boiis graced the stage to show their support and present her with her accolade. This was an incredible sight of encouragement for the pop star as she faced more lawsuits from former workers.

Lizzo graciously accepted the award and in a teary speech said, “Thank you so much for this, because I needed this right now. God’s timing is always on time!” she said. “I didn’t write a speech because I don’t know what to say in times like these.” Lizzo further described her humanitarian initiatives and other efforts with various organizations that she has donated to specifically in the LGBTQ+ community and others. “It’s easy to do the right thing when everybody’s watching you, and it’s what you do in those moments when nobody’s watching that defines who you are,” she said. “And I’m going to continue to be who I am, no matter who’s watching.” Her heartfelt speech was an obvious indirect response to increasing lawsuits and critics.
