Jennifer Hudson Makes History As Second Black Woman To Secure EGOT Status

Written by on June 13, 2022

Congratulations to Jennifer Hudson, who received EGOT status last night after A Strange Loop, which she executive produced, won best musical at the Tony Awards in New York City. With the addition of her latest win, the “Spotlight” singer completes her EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) collection, representing outstanding achievements in film, television, recording, and theatre.

What’s more, Jennifer is the second Black woman in history to have marked this incredible milestone in her career after Whoopi Goldberg. The monumental achievement now sees the 40-year-old join the likes of Rita Moreno, John Legend, and Audrey Hepburn as one of just 17 people who are part of the EGOT group. As fans will probably recall, Jennifer has earned two Grammys, one of which she received for her self-titled album back in 2009, and the second as one of the principal Broadcast cast members in The Color Purple, which won best musical theatre album in 2017.
