RAP ON THE RADIO: New York Lawmaker Proposes Ban

Written by on July 2, 2019

A New York lawmaker is trying to ban certain types of “indecent” music from being played on popular hip-hop radio stations for 16 hours a day.

Councilwoman Inez Barron introduced a bill that would limit the type of music that can be played between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Barron cited the FCC website, stating that “airing indecent programming at any time is a violation of federal law.” The specific aim is to stamp out tracks with “degrading” lyrics and themes.

This proposal is part of the “Respect Us” campaign, launched by the National Congress of Black Women in 2018. The initiative’s goal is to replace so-called “offensive” music with “uplifting” music. (WPIX-TV)
