*MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS*: Big Night for Billie, Ariana, Taylor, Missy and New Jersey

Written by on August 27, 2019

The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards were brought to us by the number three and the letters N-J. Beamed out from Newark, New Jersey, the night’s biggest winners — Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande — each scored three awards. Taylor Swift and BTS won two each.

Unlike other major events that take place in the shadow of New York City, the VMAs leaned into the fact the show took place in Newark, with Jersey-centric performances and appearances. New Jersey moments included The Jonas Brothersspeaking on the importance of the Garden State to their career and performing from the historic Jersey Shore rock club The Stone Pony. The show included a trio of Sopranos cast members shaking down MTV and the final performance of the night came from a bunch of old-school hip-hop stars and Fetty Wap

Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco, who is not from Joisey, hosted.

It was all love when Cardi B presented Missy Elliott with the Video Vanguard Award, stopping for several applause breaks from the crowd. During her acceptance speech, Missy offered gratitude to God, her glam squad and the folks who helped guide her career. Before collecting her trophy, Missy put on a choreography clinic that spanned her entire career, and even included a cameo from the now fully grown Alyson Stoner, who was the little girl in Missy’s “Work It” video from 2002.
