SLEEP: Socks in Bed?

Written by on February 23, 2021

Do you wear socks to bed? You may be on to something. A doctor has gone viral on TikTok after suggesting that wearing socks to bed actually cools your body down and can help you fall asleep faster. “So let’s talk about people who wear socks to bed,” Dr. Jessica Andrade says in the video. As opposite world as it sounds, especially to hot sleepers, Dr. Jess, as she calls herself, says, “Wearing socks makes your feet warm and this opens up the blood vessels that cools the body down. The body being cool tells the brain that it’s time for bed. So, actually, people who wear socks tend to fall asleep faster.”

She’s not alone in her thinking. Dr. Karan Rajan, a surgeon at the Imperial College London, also took to TikTok to tout wearing socks to bed. “Wearing socks to bed increases blood circulation to your feet,” he said. “This causes your blood vessels to vasodilate — they widen. When the blood vessels widen, they can get rid of heat much faster.” Yep, wearing socks actually brings your body temperature down – which leads to better sleep. “If you want better sleep, cover your feet,” Rajan said.
