LIZZO: Spazzes Out

Lizzo apologized for the language in her new track “GRRRLS.” She re-recorded the first verse, which lyrics had included the word “spaz.”

She sings in the new version “hold me back” compared with the original one, “I’m a spaz.”

Her followers educated Lizzo about that word. One of them informed Lizzo on social media, (quote) “My disability, Cerebral Palsy, is literally classified as ‘Spastic Diplegia.” Spaz doesn’t mean ‘freaked out’ or ‘crazy.’ It’s an ableist slur. It’s 2022. Do better.”

On Monday, Lizzo replied to her critics, (quote) “As a fat Black woman in America, I’ve had many hateful words used against me. I understand the power words can have. I’m proud to say there’s a new version of ‘GRRRLS’ with a lyric change.” (Billboard)
