EL CHAPO: Son of Drug Lord Captured in Mexico and Released

Mexican police captured Ovidio Guzman Lopez, the leader of a powerful drug cartel and son of notorious drug boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman,but later released him after an intense gun battle.

Security forces were conducting a routine patrol in the city of Culiacan when they were fired upon from a house. Forces returned fire and took custody of four people inside, include Guzman. Once word got out that the drug kingpin was captured, his supporters showed up en masse with guns blazing and turned the entire neighborhood into a war zone.

After being overpowered by fighters with the cartel, authorities decided to release Guzman. Officials say they made the decision to let him go in order to save lives, but critics say the decision signaled a major victory for the cartel. (BBC)
