DC FanDome: The CW’s Superman and Lois show will introduce ‘badass’ new costume

Tyler Hoechlin‘s Man of Steel is getting a brand-new costume for the Superman and Lois TV series coming to The CW early next year. The fashionable news was confirmed during the show’s panel at DC FanDome Day 2 Saturday. 

“Originally, [Superman] came on for the crossovers and that suit just wasn’t built to sustain a series,” said executive producer/showrunner Todd Helbing. “[This show] gave us a fresh slate: ‘Yeah, let’s make a new suit.’ There’s gonna be a really badass Superman suit in this show that I’m pretty excited about.”

“Putting the suit on for the first time was the most surreal moment, just because any other time that you would be wearing that suit is probably on Halloween, and that’s about it. Otherwise, I don’t know why you’re putting it on or why you have one in the first place,” said Hoechlin. “So putting it on and as you’re seeing it and realizing, ‘This is not just for a day. We’re gonna shoot this, we’re gonna tell the story that involves this character,’ I don’t think that it’s sunk in and if it hasn’t by now, it probably never will. I think being the one wearing it as opposed to seeing someone else in it, is a different experience.”

The story, which takes place after the events of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, will follow a married Clark Kent (Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) as they return to Smallville and raise two teenage boys: Jonathan (played by Jordan Elsass, the character is named after Clark’s father) and Jordan (Alex Garfin).

“As a father who happens to have two boys, that felt like a really great way to bring in some personal experience to tell a story that is as grounded as you can possibly be to have Superman in it,” Helbing explained. “And as a couple, we really get to lean into Clark and Lois not being Superman and the most famous journalist in the world, but really as parents. What is that like when you have jobs like that? Which a lot of people can relate to nowadays.”

“[Lois] doesn’t really compromise her sense of self or her goals,” Tulloch said. “One thing that I think she butts up against — and obviously Superman does, too — is being really dedicated to our careers and our jobs. We’re doing this for good and we believe in what we’re doing and Lois wants to change the world with words and Superman does it with his power. Also, how much is that alienating our kids and how good can you really be at your job if you have two teenage boys who are hormonal and each have very disparate needs?”

Superman and Lois (itself a spinoff of Supergirl) was able to wrap up its first season prior to the production shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s expected to premiere on The CW in January 2021.
