Unique antibodies in a llama named “Winter” may be another treatment for COVID-19. European researchers claim laboratory tests of the antibodies extracted from this llama blocked the coronavirus and its assorted variants.

Llamas are a favored animal for viral biologists. Unlike the large antibodies produced by humans, a llama’s immune system creates small antibodies against the stuff that makes us sick.

Sharks are like llamas in that they also produce tiny antibodies. Virologist Daniel Wrapp noted however (quote) “Sharks are not a great experimental model and are a lot less cuddly than llamas.” (Reuters)
