Someone finally came forward and claimed the record $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot from back in October.

The South Carolina Lottery says the winner came forward yesterday (Monday) and claimed the prize ahead of next month’s deadline to do so. It’s not clear why the winner waited so long to come forward, but it appears he or she did so to maintain their anonymity. This included hiring an attorney to act as their spokesperson.

The winner opted to take the lump sum cash option of about $878 million. (NBC News)
