BOX OFFICE: Worst Total in 40 Years
Written by KingCnote on December 15, 2020
The North America box office total for 2020 was the lowest in 40 years.
With the pandemic shutting down thousands of cinemas and Hollywood postponing almost all of its big-budget films, the 2020 total box office gross stands at just over $2 billion. Last year, it was $11.3 billion.
In 2020, there were only 438 releases, as opposed to 910 last year.
Bad Boys for Life, which was released on January 17th, is the year’s top-grossing movie with $204.4 million.
Things are a little better overseas with foreign ticket sales at $9 billion, but that’s still down by about 70 percent from last year.
Wonder Woman 1984 might give the domestic box office a boost when it hits theaters on Christmas Day, the same day it debuts on HBO Max.
The one bright spot was Christopher Nolan‘s Tenet, which was released over the summer and has earned $303.5 million overseas and $57.8 million domestically.
