Director Jordan Peele‘s latest horror flick, Nope, opened at number-one with $44 million.

While it’s the best opening for an original movie since his last movie, Us, Nope fell well short of the previous film’s $71.1 million debut in 2019. With a $68 million budget, Nope may have a hard time making a profit.

Thor: Love and Thunder dropped to third after two weekends at number-one with $22.1 million. The Marvel sequel has earned $276.2 million.

Minions: The Rise of Gru was third with $17.7 million, followed by Where the Crawdads Sing with $10.3 million.

Top Gun: Maverick was fifth with $10 million, taking its total to $635.6 million, which makes it ninth on the all-time domestic list.
