MIAMI BEACH: State of Emergency Extended Until April 11th

Spring break and the pandemic don’t mix – that’s what spring breakers and officials in Miami Beach are finding out the hard way.

After another wild weekend, city commissioners held an emergency meeting on Sunday and voted to extend an 8 p.m. curfew in the city’s entertainment district on Thursdays through Sundays until April 11th, which is the end of spring break.

On Saturday night, the first night police attempted to enforce a curfew, spring breakers danced on the tops of cars with bottles of booze in hand. When police tried to disperse the crowd with pepper balls, it caused a stampede.

Mayor Dan Gelber said, “I have personally had trouble even sleeping at night, worrying about what’s going to happen in the city. And that shouldn’t be a state of any mayor or any commissioners or any manager or police chief.” (The Washington Post)
