EL CHAPO: Wife Pleads Guilty

The wife of notorious drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán will soon join him in federal prison for a mandatory 10 years.

Emma Coronel Aispuro negotiated a plea deal to three federal charges: money laundering, conspiring to distribute narcotics and dealings with a foreign narcotics trafficker.

That last charge was difficult to deny. Her husband, the Mexican drug lord, was a narcotics trafficker. El Chapo now serves a life sentence plus 30 years for

Emma Coronel Aispuro agreed to marry El Chapo on the day that they met. She was still a teenager and a beauty pageant queen. Her attorney said, (quote) “She is very happy to put this behind her. She didn’t expect to get arrested after her husband received life in prison.” (People)
