The Top 5 movies this weekend:
1. Sonic the Hedgehog – $57 million
2. Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey – $17.1 million
3. Fantasy Island – $12.4 million
4. The Photograph – $12.3 million
5. Bad Boys for Life – $11.3 million
Sonic the Hedgehog raced into the record books, scoring the biggest opening weekend for a video game movie. The flick, starring Jim Carrey and James Marsden, took in $57 million between Friday and Sunday. That bests last May’s Pokemon Detective Pikachu. Sonic is estimated to make $68 million over the four-day holiday.
Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey dropped to second with $17.1 million, raising its total to $59.3 million.
The horror take on Fantasy Island opened in third with $12.4 million, despite terrible reviews.
The romance The Photograph, starring Issa Rae and LaKeith Stanfield, was close behind with12.3 million
Bad Boys for Life fell from second to fifth with $11.3 million. The Will Smith action flick has now made $181.3 million.
And Downhill, the comedy-drama starring Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, crash-landed in 10th with $4.7 million.
Parasite, the first non-English movie in history to win the Academy Award for best picture, got the biggest post-Oscar boost in the past decade, according to Variety. The South Korean thriller earned $5.5 million over the weekend, a 234% increase in ticket sales from the previous weekend. Parasite, which is already available on home video, has made $44 million in the U.S.
